I was asked to choose a piece of media and restage and translate it into a publication format. I’m a massive fan of the comedian Stewart Lee and saw publication potential in his comedic tone and pace. I chose to go with a routine titled “Moving to the Countryside” as it is one of the more self-contained routines.

Initially, I focused on the 8 most used words in the routine and presented them isolated in order of appearance to express Stewart Lee’s heavy use of repetition. Seeing Lee’s live tour made it obvious that on its own this reductive presentation was not enough to capture the spirit of the routine. Use of repetition is key but he also ‘reluctantly’ gives more information and embellishment with each repeat. I, therefore, developed a set of five A5 publications all of which contain the same routine but with different levels of detail in an attempt to capture his delivery.
